(Host) Governor Peter Shumlin says a Vermont National Guard member has died of an apparent heart attack while helping residents recover from Tropical Storm Irene.

Forty-six-year-old Master Sgt. Shawn Stocker died Tuesday.

Shumlin’s office says Stocker was leaving the Proctorsville Fire Department for a worksite in Cavendish when he was stricken.

The governor said Stocker demonstrated "extraordinary dedication" to the state and nation as a member of the Air National Guard.

He was also an Iraq war veteran and a state correctional officer.

In recognition of Stocker, Shumlin has ordered flags to be lowered to half-staff.
