Vermont likely will exceed its previous return rate on U.S. census forms, but the state still lags behind the nation as a whole.
The Census Bureau says as of late Friday between 61% and 66% of Vermonters had returned their census form, compared to the national return rate of 69%.
Michael Cutting is manager of the Census Bureau’s Vermont division. He told the Burlington Free Press he is happy with the return rate so far and that it likely will increase as forms that were mailed just before Friday’s deadline arrive in the coming days.
In 2000, about 65% of Vermont residents mailed in their forms. This time, Chittenden and Grand Isle counties have the best return rates at 73% to 78%. Essex County has the worst, with 41% to 50%.
