Vermont and New Hampshire typically have the lowest unemployment rate in New England, and currently Vermont has the smallest number of people out of work.

Tom Kavet is an economic consultant to the Vermont Legislature. He says the two states have vied for the region’s lowest unemployment for the past 10 years.

Kavet reports that out of the last 239 months, New Hampshire has had the region’s lowest unemployment for 109 months, and Vermont has taken the honor 110 times.

He says Vermont has taken the lead in recent months due to a real estate market that’s in better shape than New Hampshire’s.
