VT Edition: The Eugenics Movement

Print More

A dark chapter in the history of Vermont is getting some illumination at the Statehouse this session.  A resolution would express regret for the sterilization of Vermonters, following the Sterilization Act of 1931.  During the 1930s Vermonters of French Canadian and Abenaki heritage and also poor whites were targeted by the state government as part of the "eugenics" movement.

VPR’s Jane Lindholm talks with Representative Anne Donahue from Northfield, who has sponsored the resolution.
