More than 1 million immigrants have streamed into Canada over the past five years. Canada encourages immigration, and officially supports immigrants in maintaining their cultural identities.
But accommodating so much change is not always easy. A special Provincial Commission is looking into some of the issues that have been raised recently by both immigrants and native born Quebecers.
Jeff Heinrich covers ethnic issues for the Montreal Gazette. Pierre Anctil is director of the Institute of Canadian Studies at the University of Ottawa, and he’s also former director of the intercultural unit of Quebec’s Ministry of Immigration. They spoke with VPR’s Jan Lindholm about Quebec’s diversity issues.
