Saturday evening at 10:44pm the gavel sounded in the House chamber and weary Representatives headed home. The Senate completed its work a couple of hours earlier, but all in all a very long day for Vermont’s legislative leaders.

Lawmakers passed a budget, but did so knowing that Governor Jim Douglas is likely to veto it, and that they may be back much sooner than next January to continue wrestling with deep cuts and tax issues.

VPR’s Jane Lindholm talks with reporter Bob Kinzel about the final moments of this legislative session.
