The news from the newspaper industry is bad and getting worse. Ad revenues are down, layoffs are escalating. The Burlington Free Press just made another round of cuts and the paper’s parent company, Gannett, is in the midst of 10-percent across-the-board layoffs at its 85 papers. And this week the company that publishes the Los Angeles Times and the Chicago Tribune filed for bankruptcy. What does it mean for the future of newspapers? And how important are newspapers today? VPR’s Jane Lindholm discusses the changing face of print journalism with Saint Michael’s College journalism professor David Mindich.
