Vermont’s Roman Catholic bishop is holding special masses across the state for National Guard soldiers getting ready to head to Afghanistan and their families.

Bishop Salvatore Matano held the second of three masses on Monday at the St. Michael’s College chapel in Colchester.

The first service was last week in St. Albans. Matano plans another service for Thursday in Rutland.

About 1,500 Vermont National Guard soldiers are due to begin deploying within the next few weeks. They are due to arrive in Afghanistan early next year.

Guard Major Mike Papariello attended Monday’s mass with his wife and two children.

Papariello says it’s a big thing, knowing that people are praying for him and the other soldiers.
