Vt. auto dealers feel effects of downturn

(Host) Vermont auto dealers are feeling the effects of the economic downturn and the news that some auto manufacturers could be facing bankruptcy.

Mitchell Jay of the Vermont Auto Dealers Association says through September, Vermont vehicle sales were down just under five percent – which isn’t as bad as national figures.

But Jay says this year marks the third straight year of declining auto sales in Vermont and things are likely to get worse.

(Jay) "There’s certainly some anecdotal evidence out there that October sales were down drastically and certainly I’m hearing reports out there that November sales look no more rosy and possibly worse than October was."

(Host) Three Vermont dealerships have closed in recent months and Jay says it’s possible more could go out of business as vehicle sales continue to decline.
