Vt. Air Guard Members Deploy to Afghanistan

Thirty members of the Vermont Air National Guard engineering squadron are deploying to Afghanistan for six months.

Colonel Michael Morgan is with the 158th Fighter Wing of the Vermont Air National Guard and says the airmen will work at airfields doing similar functions as a Public Works Department.

"Maintaining facilities, maintaining heat, hot water – all the other utilities you expect at a facility," says Morgan. "In the case of where they’re going to be going, they’re trained additionally at other exercises to do successful maintenance of the air field to ensure proper launch and recovery of military aircraft."

Colonel Morgan says the Air Guard members will begin deploying shortly and all 30 members will be in-country by January. Their destination in Afghanistan is undisclosed.
