The Vermont chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union is joining the legal fray between a group of Cuban-Americans and the federal government over travel restrictions to Cuba.

In a friend-of-the-court brief filed last week, the ACLU argues that a 2004 order by President Bush limiting when Cuban-Americans can travel to Cuba violates the U.S. Constitution.

The Vermont ACLU was joined by chapters from Massachusetts and Florida and the Center for Constitutional Rights.

In March, four Vermonters, including three born in Cuba, sued the federal government in U.S. District Court in Burlington over the restrictions.

Trade and travel restrictions against Cuba date to 1961.
