Veterans officials want more federal money to serve clients

Veterans’ services officials from around the country say their offices are often in a better position to do outreach work than the federal government.

In Burlington last week, members of the National Association of State Directors of Veterans Affairs met with Senator Bernie Sanders as part of an ongoing effort to raise its profile on Capitol Hill.

Clayton Clark, head of the Vermont Office of Veterans Affairs, says VA clinics and hospitals offer a lot, but that many veterans aren’t aware the services are available.

He says his seven-person office could do more if it got some more federal money.

State-funded veterans affairs departments exist in all 50 states and disburse about $4 billion in services and benefits to veterans annually.
