A veteran member of the Berlin police department will become interim chief while a permanent replacement is sought for retired Chief William Jennings.

Sgt. Mark Monteith has served as a member of the local police department since 1998.

Town officials say a permanent replacement for Jennings could be made within the next several days.

The town select board is considering two finalists, both from Vermont.

Monteith is not one of the candidates, but he could still be considered for the position.
