Vermont’s top recovery official to return pay

The man chosen to oversee how hundreds of millions of dollars of federal stimulus money is used in Vermont says he’s going to work for minimum wage.

And then Tom Evslin says he’ll return the money to the state.

Evslin is a former state transportation secretary and communications executive.

Governor Jim Douglas has appointed him as Vermont’s chief recovery officer.

Evslin says he wanted to work for $1, but that’s against the law.

The Stowe man says he retired so he could do things that interest him rather than get paid for them. He says it seemed contradictory to create a new, expensive position when people are being laid off.

Evslin expects to be on the job at least through this year.
