A company that creates databases for pollsters says Vermont leads the country in the percentage of households with listed phone numbers. The raw figures show Vermont with 93 percent of households listed, followed by Maine at 89 percent and New Hampshire at 85 percent.

Linda Piekarski of the Connecticut-based Survey Sampling International says Vermont’s percentage may be boosted by second homes and student housing. And she says the same caveats may apply to Maine and New Hampshire.

California has the highest percentage of unlisted numbers, with nearly half that state’s residents opting not to be listed.
