Airports in Europe are re-opening as the ash cloud from the Icelandic volcano starts to clear. But it’s not over yet. Vermonters overseas are still wondering how they’re going to get home, and some European travelers are stuck here. Schools groups from Vergennes, Bristol, Bennington, Proctor and other towns are trying everything they can to get home.

Lots of comments are posted VPR’s Facebook page after we put out a call for stories of travel woes: Teri writes that her family is stuck in Ireland until Thursday and her son’s classmate is staying a bit longer than expected with family in Germany.

Fraser, a Fairlee homeowner, is held up in Istanbul and is trying to make it to the United Kingdom.

To get a handle on what it’s like to have your trip unexpectedly extended, we got in touch with Vermonter Bruce Bearman in Zurich. He was traveling to Hamburg with a colleague from Concept 2 in Morrisville, and ended up staying a bit longer than expected. Bearman speaks with VPR’s Mitch Wertlieb.
