(Host) Vermonters are making their choices in the primary election today.

They’re faced with a long list of names on both the Democratic and Republican ballots. And some say it’s been a challenge to choose among all the candidates.

Walter Cooley of Barre says his choice among the five Democrats in the governor’s race came down to a simple calculation.

(Cooley) "Which one of the Democratic candidates I thought could beat the Republican who’s running since I’m Democratic and there’s a lot of Democrats to choose from. So part of it is who can be successful in November."

(Host) Cooley says he settled on state Senator Doug Racine. His wife made the same calculation and settled on Secretary of State Deb Markowitz.

Others are choosing Senate President Peter Shumlin, former state Senator Matt Dunne or Senator Susan Bartlett.

There are also heated Republican and Democratic races for the lieutenant governor and secretary of state nominations, along with several other offices.

Polls are open until 7 o’clock tonight.
