In the coming weeks Vermonters are expected to receive about $300 million in cash from the U.S, Treasury as part of the national stimulus plan.

The payments are the centerpiece of the $168 billion package proposed by President Bush and adopted by Congress in February to boost the sluggish national economy.

Officials with the Internal Revenue Service say about 340,000 Vermonters are due to receive payments of one kind or another.

Vermont economist Jeff Carr says policy makers in Washington would like to see the money spent quickly, but Vermonters should spend it in the way that makes them feel the most comfortable.
