The winner of Vermont’s spelling bee has made it to the semifinals of the national competition in Washington.

With the correct spelling of apocope last night, Lucy Weber of Weybridge will compete in today’s semifinals.

The event will be broadcast on ESPN from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. The finals will be shown live tonight on ABC.

The 14-year-old, who is home schooled but also attends classes in Middlebury, did not make it out of the qualifying round last year.

This year she is one of 107 spellers to have advanced to the quarterfinals.
