The Vermont Technical College in Randolph Center is offering a course of study for people who want to become firefighters.

This fall 15 students are learning everything from the physics of fire, to how to hold a hose.

The two-year-program is the first of its kind in Vermont.

Officials say Vermont was the only New England state that did not have a firefighting program.

The Vermont State Colleges Board of Trustees accredited the program in 2006.

School officials and firefighters hope the program will encourage students interested in becoming professional firefighters to stay in Vermont.
