Ten Vermont public schools are vying for federal grants of $50,000 each for solar energy projects.

The schools were picked by a state panel from entries submitted in a statewide competition.

The winning proposals will be submitted to the U.S. Department of Energy.

Senator Bernie Sanders secured the funding in a federal spending bill. Sanders says the grants will be used to buy small-scale solar photovoltaic installations for educational purposes.
