Vermont has moved up a notch from the third safest state to the second safest state in a new national ranking.

The annual ranking issued by Kansas based Morgan Quitno Press found that only North Dakota is safer than Vermont. Vermont swapped places in the rankings with Maine, which was second last year but fell to third.

Nevada, New Mexico and Arizona were ranked as the most dangerous states. The safest states were North Dakota, Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire and Wyoming.
