Vermont native charged as part of Bear Stearns

A Bear Stearns Cos.’s fund managers charged in New York with lying to investors about the collapse of the subprime mortgage market is a Vermont native.

Ralph Cioffi is also a distinguished alumnus and former trustee of St. Michael’s College in Colchester.

Cioffi attended Rice Memorial High School in South Burlington and graduated from St. Michael’s in 1978.

St. Michael’s spokeswoman Buff Lindau says Cioffi has been a good friend to St. Michael’s, but hasn’t been at the college much in recent years.

An indictment unsealed in federal court charged Cioffi and another man with securities and wire fraud. Cioffi was also charged with insider trading.
