Vermont Loses In Chase For Federal Rail Funding

Gov. Peter Shumlin’s administration says it’s disappointed that Vermont did not win money in the latest round of federal railroad funding.

The state wanted money from the U.S. Transportation Department to pay for improvements on the rail line along the western side of the state.

The ultimate goal is to return passenger service between Rutland and Burlington and ultimately to Bennington.

The latest round of funding went to other projects, including some in southern New England and New York state.

The Shumlin administration says those projects will help to reduce bottlenecks elsewhere and will improve passenger service on the Vermonter and Ethan Allen Express lines.
