The 2013 session of the Vermont Legislature opened on Wednesday.

Secretary of State Jim Condos gaveled the House into session and took the roll call after observing a moment of silence in honor of the late-Rep. Greg Clark of Vergennes, who died in a car crash in November.

Lt. Gov. Phil Scott opened the Senate and administered the oath of office.

Lawmakers then moved to electing their leaders. Sen. John Campbell, who had faced a pair of challenges in his bid for a second term as president pro tempore, was nominated for the job by one of his rivals.

Republican Sen. Diane Snelling said she backed Campbell, guaranteeing his re-election.

In the House, Speaker Shap Smith was certain to be re-elected.
