Vermont joins lawsuit challenging Indiana voter law

A handful of top state election officials, including Vermont Secretary of State Deborah Markowitz, have joined a lawsuit challenging Indiana’s Voter ID law.

The lawsuit, which centers on a law requiring every voter to produce photo identification, is to be heard by the U.S. Supreme Court on January 9th. Democrats say it violates the equal protection provisions of the U.S. Constitution.

The group says there’s no evidence of polling place voter impersonation fraud, the stated reason for enactment of the Indiana law at issue.

Markowitz and the others say the law will disenfranchise some voter groups disproportionately, including minority, female and elderly voters, the disabled, and the poor, and do nothing to prevent fraud at the ballot box.
