Vermont in compliance with new federal voting law

Vermont is in compliance with most of a 2002 federal voting law. Secretary of State Deborah Markowitz says the state is doing well in meeting almost all of the standards in the Help America Vote Act.

The law was passed in response to the voting debacle that took place in Florida during the 2000 presidential election. Among other provisions, the law requires states to have technology that allows the visually impaired to vote independently and privately. Vermont is working with vendors to see what kind of technology might be most appropriate to satisfy this need.
