Vermont Guard member dies while training in Kuwait

(Host) A member of the Vermont National Guard from East Barre has died of natural causes in Kuwait. Officials said Sergeant William Normandy died of a heart attack on Sunday while training with his unit, which had arrived in Kuwait a week ago. According to the Guard, the unit provides convoy and supply route security.

Master Sergeant Jill Hicks said the death will be felt by the community.

(Hicks) “Oh it will be felt by all – his unit, the Guard as a whole, his civilian employment. Everyone – we’re all a family, whether it’s personal, work or Guard. It will be felt by all of us.”

(Host) Sergeant Normandy was employed by the Barre Town School District. He was 42.
