Voters have many tools at their disposal to assess the candidates and make a choice. But finding out who’s been donating to any given campaign is a challenge in Vermont. Candidates have to take their campaign finance reports to the Secretary of State’s office, and hand in paper copies. Voters who want to see those reports immediately have to collect a printed report, and go through it manually.

This system of filing is out of step with most states, where you can immediately access campaign finance reports online in searchable databases. In fact, Vermont has been given a failing grade in campaign finance disclosure, according to a national report.
