Vermont cleans up from big winter storm

Vermont is digging out today from a major winter storm that dumped more than a foot of snow on parts of the state.

A storm arrived early yesterday from the Midwest and pummeled the state with snow, sleet and high winds.

The latest snowfall was a big boost for Vermont’s ski areas just a week before the crucial Christmas-New Year’s period.

But utility crews were scrambling, with thousands of outages reported, especially in Bennington and Rutland counties. Central Vermont Public Service says power has been restored to all but 200 customers in Bennington County. CVPS expects those houses to come online this morning.

Vermont Emergency Management is reminding people to not overexert themselves when shoveling snow, and to use caution on the roads.

The weather has caused a number of school closures and delays in most counties in Vermont.
