Vermont arts struggle in weak economy

The economic downturn has hit the art scene in Vermont, with some arts center cutting back and others getting creative.

On Saturday, the nonprofit Frog Hollow Vermont State Craft Center in Middlebury closed. Executive director Deidre Healy says the center, which represents nearly 300 artists, will keep its Burlington gallery and retail store open.

To save money, the Vermont Stage Company in Burlington will change the way it presents a March production. Artistic director Mark Nash says VSC will present the one-man show as a staged reading rather than a play, which will require fewer rehearsals.

At the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts in Burlington, executive director Andrea Rogers says one of the biggest challenges is the loss of endowment money.
