The Vermont Air Guard is going solar.

Guard officials, accompanied by U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, will break ground Monday on an $8.5 million renewable energy project they say will sharply cut base utility costs.

The first phase of the 2.2-megawatt project will consist of a solar electrical generating plant, a fixed-ground array and a roof mounted application which will generate 1,650 kilowatt hours of electricity annually.

Lt. Col. Lloyd Goodrow says the project will reduce the Air Guard’s carbon emissions by 25 tons of carbon dioxide annually.
