The Vergennes police chief has been processed for driving under the influence of drugs after hitting a parked car.

State police say 50-year-old Michael Lowe was off duty and driving a Vergennes police cruiser when he collided with the parked car on Sunday in Vergennes. There were no injuries.

The trooper who responded said Lowe showed signs of possible impairment. Police said Tuesday that further investigation revealed that Lowe had consumed prescription drugs.

A blood sample was taken and officials are awaiting toxicology results. Lowe has not been charged with a crime.
