The University of Vermont will announce its first round of layoffs Friday, with one to two dozen positions expected to be cut.

UVM president Dan Fogel told legislators Wednesday that the school is putting off decisions about additional layoffs until officials know more about UVM’s financial health this spring.

He appeared before the House Appropriations Committee for his annual request for state funding. The amount of funding will affect size of cutbacks at UVM.

Governor Jim Douglas has proposed increasing UVM’s appropriation by 20 percent to a total of about $48 million.

Another proposal, considering state budget cuts in response to a drop in revenues, is about $32 million in funding.

The amount of funding will become more definite this spring as the Legislature works on the state budget.
