UVM Professor And Lawmaker Daniels Dies At 84

A retired Russian history expert from the University of Vermont and a former state senator from Chittenden County has died.

Robert V. "Bill" Daniels died Sunday at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.

Daniels was a Burlington native and graduate of Harvard University.

He taught at Bennington College and the University of Indiana before moving to UVM in 1956.

He was the first director of the Area and International Studies Program and was chairman of the History Department until he retired in 1988.

From 1973 to 1982 he served as a Democratic state senator from Chittenden County.

He is survived by his wife Alice, a brother, four children and four grandchildren.

Robert Daniels was 84.
