UVM president to reconsider administrative bonuses

Under fire for salary bonuses given to some administrators, the president of the University of Vermont now says he will reconsider the practice.

Daniel Fogel told a campus gathering Thursday the performance bonuses were given in hopes of attracting – and retaining – high-level administrators.

United Academics, a faculty union, says UVM paid 21 administrators nearly $900,000 in bonuses and extra pay in the past four years, including $260,000 in the current fiscal year.

Fogel announced $11 million in budget cuts last week that include 16 layoffs and the termination of the school’s men’s baseball and women’s softball programs. Fogel says he asked UVM trustees not to give him a bonus this year.
