The University of Vermont has received a $5 million grant to support a three-year research program on smart grid electrical systems.

This was UVM’s sixth try for the graduate research grant from the National Science Foundation.

A smart grid seeks to match electric power supply with consumer demand.

Officials tell the Burlington Free Press about two-thirds of the $5 million will support 22 doctoral students in the program. UVM also will hire two faculty members in power engineering and behavioral sciences.
