University of Vermont men’s basketball coach Mike Lonergan is now the highest paid coach in school history.

After his second season at UVM, Lonergan was rewarded with a five-year, $150,000 a year contract.

In his first two years in Burlington, Lonergan led the Catamounts to the America East championship both times. This year the Cats lost in the first round of the National Invitational Tournament.

UVM Athletic Director Robert Corran says he’s trying to bring the salaries of school coaches in line with coaches at similar schools.

And Corran says he wants to make it harder for other schools to lure Lonergan away from UVM.

In his two years at Vermont, Lonergan’s teams went 38-25.
