Some Vermont utilities are asking for conservation and issuing safety tips during the current cold snap.

Green Mountain Power is asking that customers trim their electrical usage where they can on, especially between 4:00 and 9:00 p.m. The company is trying to keep costs down by minimizing the amount of extra power it has to buy on the spot wholesale market.

Meanwhile Vermont Gas says homeowners should not use ovens to heat indoor spaces. The company also says cars should not be left to idle in a garage even if the door is open. Carbon monoxide monitors are recommended for every floor of a house.
