In Canada for a trade mission, representatives of Vermont’s two biggest electric utilities say they hope they can reach agreement on new contracts for power from provincial utility Hydro-Quebec.

Green Mountain Power President Mary Powell is in Quebec City already and Central Vermont Public Service’s President Bob Young was headed there as well, as the utilities try to wrap up more than a year of talks on new deals that would replace contracts expiring beginning in 2014.

Green Mountain Power spokesman Robert Dostis says a power deal isn’t the primary purpose of the visit by Vermont Gov. Jim Douglas, but that if an agreement is reached, it would be announced today.
