(Host) Unofficial vote totals in the Democratic primary for governor are agonizingly close.

As VPR’s Ric Cengeri reports, no one is confident who won.

(Cengeri) Unofficial results tabulated by news media organizations show that Peter Shumlin now leads Doug Racine by 182 votes.

With all 260 precincts reporting results  – Shumlin is ahead 18-thousand-239 votes to 18-thousand-57 for Racine.

Again, these are unofficial results gathered by VPR and other news media organization this morning and last night.

Deb Markowitz trails by about 660 votes.

None of the results is official until the secretary of state’s office certifies them. By state law, that doesn’t come until next Tuesday.

The results are so close that the candidates have the right to ask for an official recount that would take place in the Washington County Superior Court.

The 2006 state auditor’s election showed that a close statewide vote can swing one way or the other by more than 200 votes.

Still, Democrats are gathering at this hour for a unity rally in Burlington. Party officials haven’t said which of the gubernatorial candidates will speak.

For VPR News, I’m Ric Cengeri.
