Union Institute announced layoffs at its campuses across the country today, including almost 10 positions in Vermont.

Vermont College in Montpelier is part of the Union Institute, a university that provides bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programs with an emphasis on distance learning. Vice President Kristine Howland says seven faculty and staff positions will be cut at the Montpelier campus, and another 2.5 positions will be cut in Brattleboro. The layoffs affect full- and part-time employees.

Howland says reduced enrollment precipitated the need to reduce staffing and streamline the physical operations of the campuses. Currently eight buildings on the Vermont College campus are for sale.
