Union appeals state hospital replacement planning permit

A union representing state employees is appealing a permit that allows planning for the replacement of the Vermont State Hospital.

The Vermont State Employees Association says the planning permit favors moving most of the in-patient beds from Waterbury to a new facility at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.

The union agrees that the aging psychiatric hospital needs to be replaced. But it wants the state to consider all options, including building a new state-operated hospital in central Vermont.

The Vermont Supreme Court will hear the union’s formal appeal.
