The Vermont Department of Labor says the only time the state’s unemployment rate rose in 2010 was in December.

The December rate was 5.8 percent, up from November by a tenth of a percent

Before December, the state’s jobless rate was either unchanged or had declined.

Labor Commissioner Annie Noonan says that, historically, early periods of economic expansion sometimes have been marked by temporary increases in the unemployment rate as people seek work. The Labor Department expects this to be one of those times with data pointing to a slow but positive economic recovery.

Around the state, unemployment rates ranged from 3.8 percent in the Warren-Waitsfield area, to 8.3 percent in Newport.
