Underground FEMA fuel tanks removed from NH

As the government checks on hundreds of potentially leaking underground fuel tanks left over from the Cold War, New Hampshire authorities say that tanks in the state were removed long ago.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency says tanks around the country installed in the 1960s to help keep radio stations on the air during emergencies need to be inspected for leaks that might be threatening drinking water.

The agency said four of the tanks were in New Hampshire.

But the state Department of Environmental Services says there actually were eight tanks at radio stations around New Hampshire under FEMA control. The state agency said the tanks all were removed more than a decade ago and the sites do not pose a threat.
