Two Vermont Army National Guardsmen were killed in Iraq on Tuesday.

Thirty-six-year-old Kevin Sheehan and 22-year-old Alan Bean were killed Tuesday in a mortar attack. Sheehan was from Milton and Bean was from Bridport. They were members of a unit that was attached to the 16th Military Police Brigade. Six other members of the Vermont National Guard were injured in the attack.

Governor Jim Douglas says both men represent the best Vermont has to offer in service to the U.S.

(Douglas) “These are the first National Guard officers from the Vermont National Guard to die in combat and it’s a difficult experience for all of us. So our thoughts and prayers are with their families. We also are thinking of those who were injured in the attack yesterday and pray for their speedy recovery.”

(Host) Adjutant General Martha Rainville will make an official statement about the deaths and injuries later Wednesday morning.
