Police are searching for about two dozen convicted sex offenders who couldn’t be found during a recent sweep of Chittenden County.

The Chittenden Unit for Special Investigations recently checked the home addresses of the county’s 307 sex offenders and found that 26 of them were absent and therefore out of compliance.

Police Sgt. Art Cyr says police want to make sure the offenders are complying with the law.

Cyr says none of the unaccounted-for offenders is considered high-risk.

Since the sweep, five or six of the missing offenders have been located.

The second annual sweep occurred during three nights in June and one earlier this month.

Cyr says 95 percent of the offenders who were located understood why authorities were checking on them.
