Trial Gets Under Way In Custody Case Involving Lesbian Partners

A jury of 11 women and three men in Burlington will decide charges against a Mennonite pastor from Virginia.

Kenneth Miller of Stuarts Draft, Virginia, is accused of helping a woman flee the United States with her daughter rather than share custody of the girl with her former lesbian partner.

In court today, attorneys said about two dozen witnesses could be called in Miller’s trial.

He’s charged with helping Lisa Miller leave the United States to avoid having to turn over custody of her now-10-year-old daughter to Janet Jenkins of Fair Haven. The two Millers are not related.

Prosecutors Kenneth Miller he drove Lisa Miller and her daughter from Virginia to Buffalo, New York.

The mother and daughter then flew to Central America.

Opening statements in the case are expected Wednesday.
