Transit Agency In Northwest, Central Vermont Expanding

A Vermont transit agency is expanding, and will soon serve nearly 50 percent of the state’s population.

Beginning July 1, the Chittenden County Transportation Authority will let cities and towns from other counties join as members. CCTA will also merge with the Green Mountain Transit Agency, which has provided bus service in surrounding counties, with no changes in service.

Representatives of communities from Washington, Franklin, Lamoille and Grand Isle counties will be invited to join CCTA, as towns in Chittenden County now can.

The surrounding counties will be served by CCTA but the bus service will operate as GMTA.

Once the two have merged, the authority will serve 47 percent of Vermonters.

Correction: This story has been modified to reflect that the two agencies are merging. An earlier version reported that CCTA would take over GMTA.
