Towns may chip in for road, bridge projects

The state of Vermont may require communities to chip in money for road and bridge project covered by federal stimulus money.

The federal government doesn’t require a local match.

But the Vermont Agency of Transportation thinks Vermont cities and towns should put in their share – or 10 percent for most projects – so that the stimulus money can be spread to more projects.

The state currently requires a local match and the transportation officials don’t want to change that.

But some lawmakers think that’s unfair. They say the stimulus money came with no local match because of the poor economy.
